STONEWALL

Presented by the editors of Military History Magazine, this commemorative issue focuses on the Confederate general whose tactics were so brilliant they inspired the likes of George Patton and Erwin Rommel. It explores Stonewall’s incredible string of battlefield successes, including a hit-and-run series of flank attacks on his home turf — the Shenandoah Valley — where he outmaneuvered 70,000 Union troops with a force of less than 4,000 men. Examines Chancellorsville where another brilliant flank attack won the day, but a volley of friendly fire left him mortally wounded. The issue is full of surprising insights into an enigmatic character—Stonewall, the man of God who believed a wrathful deity protected him in battle; Stonewall, the executioner who ruled through fear and showed no mercy to slackers in the ranks; and Stonewall the rude, cantankerous eccentric who was nonetheless beloved by his men. Two full spread maps—of the Valley Campaign and Chancellorsville—provide an added bonus, as well as a colloquy with top historians framed around the question: Would the South have won if Stonewall lived?
