Pierre Toussaint Charbonneau Action FigureToussaint Charbonneau was a successful trader living in the Mandan villages on the banks of the Missouri River in 1803. He had two wives, Sacagawea and Otter Woman. He was hired by Lewis and Clark in November to interpret for the Corps of Discovery.
He chose to bring along Sacagwea and their new child Jean Baptiste (nicknamed Pomp) along on the adventure. Probably illiterate, he was nevertheless a good linguist, speaking both French and Mandan. He spoke no English. When negotiating with the Shoshone Nation, Sacagawea would translate to Mandan, Charbonneau would translate to French, and that would be translated to English for the benefit of Lewis and Clark.
Charbonneau was an informal member of the Corps. He is presented here in a mandan-style men's shirt and an undershirt of trade cloth, as would be expected from a person living in that manner of the country. We have provided him with a waist sash - an item commonly adopted by the French voyager.
Toussaint, Sacagawea and Pomp left the Expedition after it's return and he resumed his life as a trader. It was agreed that William Clark would see to the education of his son Pomp which he did. Charbonneau lived to be 86 years old.
Adventure figure comes with all accessories shown. Due to small parts, this figure is not recommended for small children.
